A Study on the Relationship between Perception of Role Concept and Nursing Performance


Abstract
Todays, as the expectation of clients regarding health management has increased, professional nurses are required to play a varied and enlarged role and to perform a number of different roles.
This study was made to find the relationship between the nurses perception of role concept and nursing performance. Subjective were 98 nurses were serving at CAU hospital from Feb. 8 to Feb 13. Research instruments in this study were two kinds, one was the Nursing performance scale developed by Schwirian and other was Role conception scale developed by Na. Myung Sook. Analysis of data was done by using Descriptive Statistics, ANOVA, pearson¢¥s Correlation coefficient.
1) The testing of hypothesis,
"A nurse who has a high perception of role concept has a high degree of Nursing performance," was supported. (r=0.60, p<0.001)
2) The mean score for perception of role concept was 4.33 (range 1-5).
Among the components, perception of role concept was highest for the professional component, followed by service component, and bureaucratic component.
3) The mean score for the level of nursing performance was 3.96 (range 1-5).
Among the components, nursing performance was highest for professional development, followed by interpersonal relationship & communication, leadership, Planning & evaluation, Critical care and Teaching & collaboration.
4) An analysis of the relationship of perception of role concept and general characteristics was found to be statistically, significant for;
position (F=2.72, p<0.05), religion (F=0.97, p<0.05).
5) An analysis of the relationship of nursing performance and general characteristics was found to be statistically, not significant.
The results of this study show that the higher the perception of the role concept the higher the nursing performance, but are not to be extended to any other samples.
